Meet Kathya Alexander, Author of ‘Angel In The Outhouse’

We are excited to introduce our newest author, Kathya Alexander!

Ms. Alexander, a resident of Seattle, Washington, is a writer, actor, storyteller, and teaching artist; who is decorated with many accolades and achievements.

Her latest project, ‘Angel In The Outhouse,’ is a collection of short stories about the ordinary life of an African American family during the extraordinarily tumultuous time of the Civil Rights Movement.

Get to know a little a bit about Kathya’s influences, inspirations, and see what advice she gives to motivate others in their writing journey:

What inspired the creation of ‘Angel In the Outhouse’? 

I have been writing stories for the past 10 years as part of Aunt Mama’s Story Table at the Madison Park Starbucks in Seattle.  Audience members (and others) have asked for years where they can get my stories.  Now they can!
Who are your biggest literary influences
My biggest literary influences are Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Toni Cade Bambara.  My writing style has been greatly influenced by the Negro writers I grew up reading in my segregated school in Arkansas – Paul Lawrence Dunbar and James Weldon Johnson.
What advice would you give to other aspiring writers/authors/storytellers?

Finish something!  A published author told me once, “There were many people in my classes that were more talented than me, but they never completed their projects.  I did.  And now I’m published and they’re not.”
